June 30

We leave in two days but I can’t believe it or get excited. I’ve done my packing – mostly toiletries. I’m bringing two pairs of cotton pants (one flowered, one grey) a pair of jeans, a yellow t shirt and a flowered cotton one, two undershirts (white and pink), two pairs of white ankle socks, one white and one pink and one pair of sport socks. Also my pink cardigan, a raincoat, my pink runners and ma’s loafers.

Lori, Harold and Deb were over this evening. Bonnie and Helen, Dad’s students calso came over. Yesterday we were at Lori and Harold’s and met some people from France – Alain, Catheleen, Sean, Timna and Aroure. The grown ups here tonight had wine and muffins on the caboose roof. Dad’s brown painting is really good.

NG Gallery New Art Group Show

Today is my Sydney show debut! I have three pieces in the NG Gallery New Art Group show. I hope you can come down and check them out. The gallery is located in the uber-cool art mecca of Chippendale in Sydney!

Curated by Tessa Dorman the group exhibition, ART NOW, concentrates on just that, art. now. It aims to take a snapshot of the current state of contemporary art in Sydney.

The prevailing feature that is most notable in the arts – is that there is no distinguishable feature, style, school or methodology. It has no central themes.

Within this non-definable movement let us take a look at Sydney as a geographical centre, and study the laws of nodal concentration. Due to coexisting and unknowingly cooperating with each other there is a harmonious balance in art making, presentation and validation within our cultural orbit of Sydney that is a unique and exceptional experience unto ourselves that is worth capturing and celebrating.

Opening reception will be held on Wednesday 18 June from 6-8pm at NG Art Gallery.

Bad Kitty! Mademoiselle Poulet Singing in the Dead of Night

Music and Progress

A few posts ago I showed some images of a few of the paintings that I did in Canada. Recently I heard a song by Aussie singer songwriter Dustin Tebbutt. It was so amazing that I burst into tears the first time I heard it. And the second. And the third. It just made me feel something so melancholy and cold and beautiful and intense. It reminded me of being at home in the winter, of missing dad, of beauty and sorrow and great simplicity.
I found out after doing some research that he’d recorded it in Scandinavia and had this same feeling of loneliness and longing, of solitude and beauty and how amazingly different the cold white winter landscape is compared to the tropical lushness of Australia.

So I took his beautiful song and put some images of those Canadian pieces together in a little video. His music makes my art look better.

Blood and Bones

Here’s his version too:

More me!

The Design Federation kindly did this awesome post about my upcoming exhibition in Brisbane. I’m super excited. I still have a few pieces that I want to paint, but the show is looking great! yay!

From the Far East

I recently was in Melbourne and went to visit a friend’s shop that imports antique kimonos and kimono fabric. It was really beautiful stuff and I was keen to feel inspired. When I got home I thought and thought. I started off with a few paintings with fish but then it evolved into my muses with Japanese and Chinese inspired flowing gowns and I started incorporating origami paper. I’m going to continue this and see what happens.

What do you think of mixed media? Also I’m now on the hunt for some great origami or fabric looking paper. Any hot tips?

Under African Skies

I recently found a piece of plywood that was amazing and had this awesome leopard pattern on it.

Here’s what I did with it!
